first edition first printing Cowpers Poem, (title cont) From a Cotton Plantation Near the Red River, in Louisiana. Dedication page: [ To Harriet Beecher Stowe: whose name, throughout the world, is identified with the great reform: this narrative, affording another Key to Uncle Tom's cabin is respectfully dedicated. ] The rare true first printing of this scarce title, with no mention of Thousand at top of title page (later printings say Fifth Thousand, Tenth Thousand, etc.). In addition, 1853 is stated on both the title and copyright pages, and there is no mention of a London edition on the title and copyright pages (later printings have this). Four-page History of All Nations catalog bound between front pastedown and flyleaf, as issued. Book has general wear, rubbed extremities, corners bumped, yellow front free end page missing, hinges cracked, spine peeling, pages age toned, foxing, some staining to boards and few pages, delicate condition, appendix from page 323-336, Song Roaring River on page 322, includes all 7 wood engraved illustrations. Original binding, brown boards, boards are still attached (very delicate), spine foundation visible since the small portions of outer cloth has deteriorated and began to flake, lettering of title, author and publisher are still visible in faded gold gilt on spine.
