He studied at the Art Students League of New York and founded and operated the Gloucester School of Art from 1929 to 1970. Gruppe's work has been featured in numerous one-artist shows and in group shows at the National Academy of Design, Allied Artists of America, Audubon Artists, Salmagundi Club, and Grand Central Art Galleries in New York; Rockport Art Association in Massachusetts; Art Institute of Chicago, and others. Gruppe's work is also represented in many private and public collections, including that of the Los Angeles County Museum, New Britain Museum of American Art, Butler Museum, San Antonio Art League, Fort Wayne Art School, Montclair Art Museum, University of Idaho, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Alfred University. His work has also won many prizes and awards, most notably from the National Academy, Allied Artists, the Salmagundi Club, and the Rockport Art Association.
