Chesterton, G. K.; The Ball and the Cross
NEW YORK, JOHN LANE CO., 1909 FIRST ED, HARD BACK
Overall Condition is: GOOD
Worn Red Cover. Former Library Book. Shows some signs of wear, and may have some markings on the inside. First edition, preceding the English edition. Chesterton's second novel chronicles a hot dispute between two Scotsmen, a Roman Catholic and an athiest, whose fanatically held opinions inspire a host of comic adventures. A young Catholic, enraged by attacks made by a rationalist on the veneration of the Virgin Mary, tries to engage him in a duel; the rationalist is keen to cross swords but the world seems bent on preventing the fight. Their attempts to find a battlefield draw them closer together, and when they are seperately tempted by the devil they see the error of their ways and join forces against him. A boisterous allegory, made seductively persuasive by the author's zestful rhetoric. Overall in good condition.
