Printer by Philadelphia lithographer Louis Rosenthal, based on designs by Henry Morton. The Rosetta Stone is considered one of the most important discoveries of the nineteenth century. Unhearted in 1799 by explorers excavating in the Nile Delta, it is a fragment of basalt containing inscriptions in Hieroglyphic, Demotic and Greek text. A plaster cast of the Stone given to teh Philomathean Society at the University of Pennsylvania inspired the Stufy and subsequent publication of the findings of Chas. R. HAle, S. Huntington Jones,a nd Henry Morton, resulting in this extraordinary book. Spine detached. Rubbed cover. Tears and chipped on the cover. Gold gilt symbol on cover. Bookplat eon fep.
